As I stated in my Announcement Post, I am hosting this month’s Food ‘n Flix with inspiration from the movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.  I wanted to get a little wacky and fun and colorful (and a little naughty) so I made this beautiful stained glass jello and boozed it up a little.

The process starts out with setting a few different colors of jello – you can use less colors (red and green for Christmas, for example) but I wanted to be pretty colorful.  I also added alcohol, which you can leave out.

Once the jello is fully set, cut it into cubes and toss together gently in a 9×13 glass pan.  Put it back into the fridge to make sure it stays cold.

Ooo – pretty jello.  Meanwhile, make the creamy white gelatin with sweetened condensed milk, plain gelatin, and water (or alcohol).  I actually wish I had used whipped cream vodka or amaretto in this step instead of water because the finished product didn’t pack as much of a punch as I was hoping.  Next time…

Pour the white gelatin over the jello cubes, but ONLY AFTER IT IS COMPLETELY COOL.  This is super important because if it is warm, the colored jello will start to melt and all the colors will run and bleed.

Once it has set completely, you can cut it into blocks and have a lot of fun.  I think Wonka would approve.

Stained Glass Alcoholic Jello
adapted from Jelly Shot Test Kitchen

Colored Layer:
4 cups water
4 envelopes Knox gelatin
4 3 oz boxes flavored gelatin dessert in various colors
4 cups ice cold vodka or rum (I used coconut rum)
*note – for non alcoholic, use water or juice instead

Pour water into a small saucepan and sprinkle with gelatin. Allow to soak for a minute of two. Heat over low heat, stirring constantly, until gelatin is dissolved (about 5 minutes).

Pour the flavored gelatin powder into separate bowls. Divide the hot gelatin mixture and add one part to each bowl. Stir until dissolved. Let cool for a few minutes, then stir in the liquor. Pour into four separate containers to chill – I used four standard 1 lb loaf pans in order to have relatively symmetrical gelatin blocks. Chill until fully set, several hours or overnight.

White Layer:
4 cups water (Or 2 cups water, 2 cups alcohol of some sort)
5 envelopes Knox gelatin
1 (14 oz) can sweetened condensed milk

Pour water into a medium saucepan and sprinkle with the gelatin. Allow to soak for a minute or two. Heat over low heat, stirring constantly, until gelatin is dissolved (about 5 minutes). Stir in the can of condensed milk. Set mixture aside to cool to room temperature.

Remove the colored gelatin from the refrigerator and cut into small blocks. Carefully mix the blocks as desired and place in a 9 x 13 glass or non-reactive metal pan. Return blocks to refrigerator until milk mixture is cool.

Once the milk mixture is cooled, divide equally and pour it over the gelatin blocks. Skim off any small bubbles that form. Chill until fully set, several hours or overnight.

To serve, cut into squares and plate.

    • In this recipe? There is no clear jello. There is colored jello from flavored boxes and an opaque white jello made with sweetened condensed milk and Knox plain gelatin packets. If you are asking how to make it in general – use the Knox packets and water or white grape juice. You could put a clear liquor in that too, but it can’t be all alcohol or it won’t set. I hope that helped!
