This is the cake I bought for my recent birthday – and yes, it looks like sushi! This is seriously the most beautiful/coolest cake I have ever seen. I saw it on display at Sweet City Desserts in Vienna and just had to have it!

Here is a better look at the top, complete with salmon, tamago, and shrimp nigiri, salmon roe, two rolls, wasabi, soy sauce, pickled ginger, and even those little grass dividers! All of the sushi pieces are made painstakingly by hand (which is why this cake comes at a premium cost – $250) and they are all edible! That being said, they turned out to be not so tasty – so I recommend admiring and not eating.

The base of the cake is made to look like a wooden box.

Look at the crazy detail here – the swirled wood pattern, the individual pieces, even the little rivets – just amazing!

Here is a close up of the rolls, showing the little candies they use to make the rice look textured.

This is the inside of the cake. I almost didn’t care what it would taste like because it was just so freaking cool – but it turned out to also be super delicious! The cake was really moist and the frosting was not super sweet (which I hate) and actually tasted kind of like marshmallow to me. I really, really enjoyed it.

This is my piece – you can see that the wood slats tend to fall off when cutting the cake, but that isn’t really a big deal. I believe that all the decorations (including the wood) are made from fondant, but for some reason the wood slats tasted better than the sushi pieces to me.

The people at SCD are super, super nice. They are clearly really excited about what they do and proud of their work. They were really excited when I ordered the cake, and when I came to pick it up everyone came out to say Hi to me and tell me who worked on what – it really made me feel happy. They were so sweet, and they gave me a free cupcake for my birthday! (Well, and also because I ordered an expensive cake, probably :-p) I choose the Samoa cupcake (like the Girl Scout cookie!) – super delicious with caramel, chocolate, and coconut.

I really like the vibe of their bakery, too. The decor is modern and cool, kind of like a coffee shop – which fits because they sell coffee and have a couple of cool lounge areas to hang out. I think it would be a really cool place to hang out or study, they even have open mic nights! So I am surprised that every time I go in there, the place is totally empty. Maybe it’s just because I come at weird times in the middle of the day? I don’t know – but I hope they keep up business because this is a really, really cool place.
